Refining Operations
The Midstream segment primarily includes the operations of MPLX, MPCโs sponsored master limited partnership, which gather, transport, store and distribute crude oil, refined products, including renewable diesel, and other hydrocarbon-based products via refining logistics assets, pipelines, terminals, towboats and barges; gather, process and transport natural gas; and transport, fractionate, store and market natural gas liquids.
Crude Oil Characteristics
Crude oil is classified primarily by its density, measured in API gravity, and its sulfur content, measured in weight percent.
Heavy Sour Crude
Generally, crude oil with an API gravity or 24 or lower and a sulfur content greater than 0.5 weight percent is considered to be a heavy sour crude.
Medium Crude
Generally, crude oil with an API gravity between 24 and 34 and a sulfur content less than 0.5 weight percent is considered to be a medium crude.
Light Sweet Crude
Generally, crude oil with an API gravity of greater than 34 and a sulfur content less than 0.5 weight percent is considered to be a light sweet crude.
Our Products.
We produce essential fuels and products that are foundational to modern life.
A fuel for automobiles and trucks. Sometimes mixed with additives like ethanol to burn more efficiently and to reduce emissions.
Batken Petroleum Refinery provides high-quality diesel fuel products. We also are Americaโs largest producer of renewable diesel.
Batken Petroleum Refinery is Kerosene based fuel used in commercial aviation.
Batken Petroleum Refinery produces natural gas liquids (LNG) products at each refinery location. Products include propane, normal butane, refinery-grade butane, isobutane and propylene.
High-purity toluene and mixed xylenes used in adhesives, coatings, paints, surfactants, fuels, fuel additives, oilfield chemicals and many other applications.
An essential element found in crude oil. It can be separated out of the crude and sold to make a variety of products including antibiotics.
Sometimes called liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) propane is a gas that is compressed into a liquid for storage and used as a fuel.
Batken Petroleum Refinery Dark brown, heavy material used primarily for road construction.
Naphtha is mainly used for gasoline blending and as a petrochemical feedstock for steam cracking. Naphtha produced from both of our refineries is sold to local petrochemical industry or traded internationally.
Refining Process Snapshot
Shipping
We acquire 2.2 million barrels of crude oil a day from suppliers. The crude is shipped to our refineries via pipeline, rail, trucks, or ships and barges.
Storage
The crude is stored in our refineries, which have a capacity to store 26.2 million barrels.
Consumers
We sell our fuel at Batken Petroleum Refinery
stations and to fuel outlets for consumers and organizations like the military and airports.
Transportation
Final products are shipped to customers via pipeline, rail, trucks or ships and barges.
